What these interviews test
O*NET's profile for customer service representatives lists tasks such as talking with customers to give information, take orders or get details of complaints, keeping records of each interaction, checking that fixes were made and referring unresolved grievances to the right department. Interviews check those with role-plays and short scenarios.
Much of the job is your voice. Interviewers listen to whether you sound calm, speak at a steady pace and explain things simply. Many first rounds are phone or video calls, so the interview is itself a sample of the work.

How to prepare
- Practice on the phone. Role-play an angry caller with a friend and record your voice.
- Slow your pace. Aim for steady and clear. Check recordings for rushing.
- Prepare a turnaround story. An upset customer you helped and what you said.
- Learn the product. Know the three most common issues customers have.
Then say your answers out loud. In an AI mock interview the interviewer asks your role's questions and follows up, and you see where you rambled, rushed or hedged.
