What these interviews test
O*NET's profile for retail salespersons lists tasks such as greeting customers and finding out what they need, answering questions about merchandise, describing and explaining products, processing payments, handling returns and exchanges, and watching for security risks. Store managers turn each of those into a short scenario.
They also hire for reliability. Be ready to explain your availability clearly, and give examples of showing up and staying calm on busy days. A friendly, steady voice matters because it is the job.

How to prepare
- Visit the store. Notice how staff greet people and what customers ask.
- Prepare an angry-customer story. What happened, what you said and how it ended.
- Be clear on availability. Write your days and hours before the interview.
- Practice a warm voice. Say your answers aloud with a smile and check your pace.
Then say your answers out loud. In an AI mock interview the interviewer asks your role's questions and follows up, and you see where you rambled, rushed or hedged.
