What these interviews test

O*NET's profile for marketing managers lists tasks such as using sales forecasting and strategic planning, evaluating the financial side of product development, developing pricing strategies, initiating and analyzing market research, and directing marketing staff. Interviews cover the same ground: strategy, money, evidence and people.

Expect to be pushed on proof. Anyone can describe a campaign. Interviewers want the goal, the budget, the result and your part in it, and they want to hear what you would test next.

9 questions and how to answer them

How to prepare

  1. Build a results sheet. Three campaigns, each with goal, budget, result and your role.
  2. Audit their marketing. Look at their site, ads and emails and note one thing you'd test.
  3. Prepare a budget answer. How you'd split a fixed budget and why.
  4. Practice a case aloud. A 90-day plan for a launch, said in three minutes.

Then say your answers out loud. In an AI mock interview the interviewer asks your role's questions and follows up, and you see where you rambled, rushed or hedged.
