What these interviews test

O*NET's profile for management analysts lists tasks such as gathering and organizing information on problems, analyzing data to develop alternative solutions, interviewing personnel, documenting findings and preparing recommendations. A case interview compresses that into thirty minutes, spoken aloud.

Interviewers watch your structure more than your answer. State how you will break the problem down before you dive in, say your reasoning as you go and end with a recommendation. Fit questions run alongside, often about leadership and handling disagreement.

9 questions and how to answer them

1. “A retailer's profits are falling. How would you investigate?”

How to prepare

  1. Do cases aloud. At least ten, with a partner, saying your structure first.
  2. Drill mental math. Percentages and rough multiplication, said aloud.
  3. Prepare five fit stories. Leadership, conflict, failure, influence and a tight deadline.
  4. Learn the firm. Its sectors and a recent project it published.

Then say your answers out loud. In an AI mock interview the interviewer asks your role's questions and follows up, and you see where you rambled, rushed or hedged.
