What these interviews test
O*NET's profile for accountants and auditors lists tasks such as reviewing accounts for discrepancies and reconciling them, preparing tax returns, inspecting books and systems for efficiency and accepted procedures, detecting weak controls or non-compliance, and reporting on finances to management. Interviews test accuracy and judgment around each one.
Interviewers also test communication. The job often means telling a manager that a number is wrong or that a deadline is at risk. Say what you found, what it means and what you recommend, in that order.

How to prepare
- Prepare an error story. A mistake found, how and what control you added.
- Rehearse the close. Explain the steps aloud in two minutes.
- Know the tools. The software the firm lists, and examples of your work in similar tools.
- Practice explaining numbers. Describe a variance in two sentences for a non-accountant.
Then say your answers out loud. In an AI mock interview the interviewer asks your role's questions and follows up, and you see where you rambled, rushed or hedged.
