What these interviews test

O*NET's profiles for elementary and secondary teachers list tasks such as establishing and enforcing rules for behavior, adapting teaching methods and materials to students' varying needs, setting clear objectives for lessons, and observing and evaluating students' performance. Interview panels turn each of those into a scenario.

Many schools also ask for a short demo lesson. Panels notice your voice: clear instructions, steady pacing and warmth. Practice giving a five-minute explanation out loud, with a check for understanding in the middle.

How to prepare

  1. Prepare a five-minute lesson. Teach it aloud with a check for understanding, and time it.
  2. Write three classroom stories. A behavior moment, a struggling student and a lesson you fixed.
  3. Read the school's profile. Student numbers, programs and results the school publishes.
  4. Practice your voice. Clear, slower instructions. Record and listen for rushed parts.

Then say your answers out loud. In an AI mock interview the interviewer asks your role's questions and follows up, and you see where you rambled, rushed or hedged.
